Increase Your Income – Part 6

In Part 6, you will learn from someone who received incredible prosperity because He did what God told Him to do even though it made no sense to him.
Now Elijah the Tishbite, one of the settlers of Gilead, said to King Ahab: “As the Lord God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall be no dew or rain these years, except at my word.” Then the word of the Lord came to him saying: “Leave this place, turn eastward, and hide yourself by the Wadi Cherith, east of the Jordan. It will come about that you will drink from the wadi (brook). I have also commanded the ravens to feed you there.” So he went and did according to the word of the Lord (and) …the ravens kept bringing him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the wadi. 1 Kings 17:1-6
God has told some of you to do something. Does that mean He emailed you, texted you, or spoke in an audible voice? Probably not. But you’ve had an unction inside you that has gnawed at you and won’t go away. How do you know if it is from God? Well ask yourself if what you are being asked to do honors Him and lines up with the Bible.
Ok, so maybe you’re supposed to start a business, change jobs, move somewhere, etc. But you’re holding back because you’re thinking, “God, I can’t do that. I’m hardly making ends meet now. Did you ever think that maybe He is NOT sending your needs to where you are now, because you no longer belong in your present place or situation? So the question is, are you where God has told you to be? Are you doing what He told you to do?
So he (Elijah) went and did according to the word of the Lord, he went and lived by the Wadi Cherith, … And the ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening; and he drank from the brook. 1 Kings 17:5-6
In other words, if Elijah had stayed where he was, he could have complained and said, “God, why aren’t You supplying my needs?” And he could have starved while God was providing his needs. Some of you aren’t experiencing His supernatural provision because you are here, not “there where you belong.” When you step out in faith with no guarantees, then you will see the provision of the Lord. Some folks aren’t seeing provision from God financially, emotionally, or whatever, because they aren’t doing what God told them to do.
As I told you before, in 1999 my wife Jackie and I left Philadelphia, our grown children, and a thriving business because God told me to “go help Steve.” Which meant help him get a Messianic Jewish synagogue started in Tampa. Jackie thought I was nuts. How were we going to live? We’d have no jobs, no money, nowhere to live, and no way to take care of ourselves. She had not heard from God and was really enjoying being a teacher. She said I just wanted to move to Florida (which I did) and she wasn’t moving! Period! Then God intervened by having the township stop us from having an employee come to the house to work for us anymore. So Jackie had to stop her teaching job to do his job. She was NOT happy! But God was at work.
Then God tells me to buy a house in Florida. Now you need to know that we had been through a very tough time financially and had bad credit. Moving to Florida and buying a house would be impossible as all of our clients were from Philly so we’d have to start all over with no income. But that’s what God told me to do. So I booked a flight but Jackie wouldn’t come. (she did eventually) We found a house, put down a deposit and came back home.
Getting a mortgage was a joke. Bad credit, no income when we would get into Florida, and 3% down. It took no time for the mortgage to get turned down. But I kept going back to them with more and more documentation but they kept saying no. Then it happened. Our business always got really slow in October through December, and we were to settle at the end of December. But that year we made so much money that we paid off all the loans the mortgage company wanted us to.
But they still turned us down. “You won’t have jobs and your credit stinks” was basically what they said. Our mortgage needed to be approved by Dec. 23rd or we’d lose the house. So I called one more time on the 23rd and when the receptionist picked up the phone they were having a loud Christmas party and she was drunk. She asked who was calling and I said Don Goldstein. The next thing I hear is her laughing and slurring her words and yelling out… it’s Goldstein again. And I heard everyone laughing when she said it. Then the manager, who I had spoken to a million times picks up the phone and says, “Mr. Goldstein, I just want you to know that I need to approve one more loan before the end of the year so I am going to approve yours today!” Just like that and we flew down and settled 4 days later. Still no jobs, but we made so much money in that period that we had $10,000 in cash to come down with. Only God! If I hadn’t obeyed, stepped out, and done what He told me to do, we would have missed out on all of this. I had to go “there” which is here. God doesn’t just make things happen; we need to cooperate.
Now remember Elijah called on the rain to stop.
Then it came to pass after a while that the wadi dried up, because there was no rain in the land. Then the word of the Lord came to him saying: “Arise, go to Zarephath of Sidon and stay there. I have just commanded a widow there to provide for you.” So he arose and went to Zarephath. Now when he came to the town gate, to his surprise, a widow was there gathering sticks. So he called her and said, “Please bring a little water in a jar that I may drink.” As she was going to fetch it, he called her and said, “Please bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.” So she said, “As the Lord your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of flour in the jar, and a little oil in the jug. Now look, I am gathering a couple of sticks, so that I may go in and prepare it for me and my son, that we may eat it and die.” Elijah said to her, “Fear not! Go and do as you said, but first make me a little cake from what you have there. Bring it out to me and afterwards, make some for you and for your son. For thus says the Lord God of Israel, ‘The jar of flour shall not be exhausted nor shall the jug of oil be empty until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.’” So she went and did according to the word of Elijah—and she and he, and her household ate for many days. The jar of flour was not exhausted, nor did the jug of oil become empty, according to the word of the Lord, which He spoke through Elijah. 1 Kings 17:7-16
So Elijah does what God tells him and he finds the widow. But she is broke and she and her son are starving to death. Most of us would think, wrrrrong widow. But Elijah understood her poverty was not what God’s will for her was. She was holding on to her perceived last meal out of fear, instead of being blessed by sharing what she had. And just as the widow benefitted greatly by letting go and letting God bless her by giving her last morsels of food to Elijah, the same is true of you. We all need to be obedient. In addition, by being obedient, God not only provides for you, but for those you bless because you were obedient. That’s a good thing!
I know that some of you are thinking, maybe that’s why things aren’t working in my life, I haven’t been obedient to what God told me to do! Well, that’s probably correct! It’s not that God won’t bless you, it’s that His blessing is over “there” waiting for you.
If the reason you won’t step out is because you’ve got “security” here, I encourage you to do what God told you to do. When you stop doubting and saying your “but what ifs and yeh buts” and go to your “their” place, there is incredible supernatural provision. Nike says it best… JUST DO IT!
Here’s how to increase your income at your job. Figure out how to improve things, not just how to earn a check. Figure out ways to improve your company’s systems, management processes, and production procedures. Help them develop better marketing by thinking like the consumer of the product or service your company provides. What would you want the ideal product or service to look like or be like? Then solve that problem and tell the boss so he can improve his company’s profitability. Hey, start acting like that and someday you may wind up owning the place! Yeh, why not you?
What are you chopped liver? No, you are a child of the Most High God! Go for it!
I’ll see you in the final part, Part 7.
