Increase Your Income – Part 5
Let’s start Part 5 with a story. A friend of mine needed to make money fast and he knew how to make coquito, which is a delicious drink that is very popular in Puerto Rico around Christmas time. But he didn’t know what to do to sell a bunch of it fast enough to pay some bills. He lives in Miami where tons of Puerto Ricans work. It was December so I told him to rent a Santa suit, go into large office buildings wearing the suit and offer to deliver coquito as a Christmas gift to the friends and families of the people who worked there. I also told him to bring a chilled bottle with him so they could taste it. He thought I was crazy but he needed the money so he did it. The great part is he thought of something creative to further increase his income. He could sing, so he offered to sing a song at the door when he made the delivery and he made extra money for each delivery. What he did was solve a problem for the employees who still needed to shop for some gifts and made $2700 by Christmas!
Remember… When you make more money and you use that money to bless people, then God will give you even more money… so you can keep blessing even more people. His circle of blessings never ends as long as you keep giving back. Let me repeat that… When you make more money and you use that money to bless people, then God will give you even more money… so you can keep blessing even more people. His circle of blessings never ends as long as you keep giving back.
A lot of people ask how they can build God’s Kingdom, and in turn He will build theirs. Well now you know… but will you do it?
Be a living example of God’s best in the excellent way you do things, how you treat people, and most importantly not being afraid to give Him the glory out loud in public as situations warrant it.
…Whoever acknowledges Me before men, I will also acknowledge him before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven. Matthew 10:32,33
Which brings us to another essential ingredient in being successful; branding. What product is this:
- Just do it! (Nike)…
- It takes a licking and keeps on ticking! (Timex… I am showing my age)…
- Melts in your mouth, not in your hands. (M&Ms)
The most important brand in your life is your word, your integrity, honesty, dependability, loyalty, etc. Remember boxing champ George Foreman got paid over a $100 million for the rights to his good name and image on the Foreman grill. He used that money to build God’s kingdom. But if your name is associated with lying, cheating, laziness, or a bad attitude, you probably won’t find good people who want to associate with you.
“A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches…”Proverbs 22:1
An area that people rarely consider as their brand is their credit score. So since I am trying to help you to increase your income, one way to do that is to have a higher credit score (good name), which lowers your payments on credit cards, insurances and loans.
As an example: A $150,000.00 30-year mortgage:
- at 3% interest rate costs about $632/month.
- at 6% interest rate costs about $899/month.
- You save/make $267/month or $3,204 a year
- You save/make $32,040 over 10 years
- You save/make $64,080 over 20 years
- You save/make $96,120 over 30 years.
Big difference isn’t it? Almost $100,000!
Here is a proven and honest way to increase your credit score. Go to your bank and buy a CD (certificate of deposit) from them. Then give the CD back to them as collateral for a loan that they will then be willing to give you because they have nothing to lose; as you are borrowing against your own money. Make sure to make the loan for one-year, make the payments on time, and do not pay it off early. In order for this to positively affect your credit score the loan must last a year. Then when you have paid off the loan, the bank will give you back your CD, so you get your original money back. If you use it to repeat the process, then at the end of 2 years you’ll have paid back two loans on time and again got your money back. Your only cost is the interest on the loan. Suggestion: Take a bigger loan the second time.
Ok let’s discuss another extremely important part of success in life and finances; communication. This is so important that God said this about it…
Death and life are in the control of the tongue. Those who indulge in it will eat its fruit. Prov. 18:21
In order to obtain success you will need to learn to improve the way you speak so that even words of correction are received well. Harsh words destroy, while kind words build up and invite a positive response from the hearer. God says it this way…
Let no harmful word come out of your mouth, but only what is beneficial for building others up according to the need, so that it gives grace to those who hear it. Ephesians 4:29
Like a city whose walls are broken down is one with no control over his temper. Proverbs 25:28
Unpredictable outbursts of anger not only destroy your brand, but they stifle peace, progress and honest communications amongst those who are on the receiving end of your outbursts. If your employees, your family, or your co-workers are afraid to be honest with you because they could be subject to your verbal wrath, your big mouth can absolutely kill your success!
Kind words heal and help; cutting words wound and maim.Proverbs 15:4
Harsh words are like throwing gasoline onto a fire, while kind words are like throwing water on it. Just know that conflict in the business world is always costly. The Bible says to resolve conflict, first go directly to the person and try to kindly resolve the problem. If that doesn’t work, bring in a third party who is wise and unbiased to help. Then if that still doesn’t work, then go to leadership.
Which brings me to the last topic for today, which is negotiating; something you started learning when you were young. If you didn’t get what you wanted from mom, you went to dad, right? When that didn’t work you tried another tactic, and another. Mastering honest negotiating skills will bring you much success. Compromise is part of life’s success. But never compromise your integrity. It reflects God’s honor. The person who is not willing to negotiate and compromise loses the war, even if they win a battle here and there.
Let me close with this… When negotiating, it is imperative that both sides feel respected. So try to create a win-win solution where both parties can feel as good about the outcome as possible. Many people expect to get everything they want for nothing, which is why they often have nothing. Honest and effective negotiations mean you are willing to give up something, or more of something that you don’t want to give up, in order to gain overall success.
A sign of a good negotiator is one who cares whether the hearer is receiving their offer in a positive or negative way. Ask yourself how you would want the information you’re telling them to be told to you? Always show respect and be kind.
