Increase Your Income – Part 4

Let me review and summarize a couple of previous things the Bible says about priorities and how they directly affect our lives.

“So I say to you, do not worry about what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear.  …Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” Matthew 6:25,33

Life in general and of course business, are based on priorities. Check your daily schedule and checkbook. Where do you spend the most time and money? Your schedule and checkbook don’t lie. If God is your first priority then you won’t be struggling to make ends meet. Why struggle when God guarantees us an easier and better way?

Success requires the wise management of all assets. Your family is an invaluable “asset.” So treat them as your second priority only to God. Being a good provider doesn’t replace being there for your family. We ran a multi-million dollar company but we chose to only be open Monday to Thursday, so we had more time to honor God and be with family.

Did you know that Chick-Fil-A, on a store-by-store basis, is by far the most profitable fast food chain? Yet they close on Sundays to honor God and they stand up for God’s values!  They make way more money in 6 days than all the others do in 7!

One crucial thing; learn to laser focus and don’t do too many things at once, or everything will suffer. Use your time wisely by setting goals. Instead of vague statements about where you would like to be a year from now, make specific goals for every month and quarter. Remember, if you aim at nothing you’ll surely hit it! Don’t underestimate God… He wants to bless your socks off!

For I know the plans that I have in mind for you, declares the Lord, plans for peace and not calamity, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11

Time is money, but with poor time management, you’ll work just as many hours, and make less money.

So let’s get more specific. Start by making a list of what you need to accomplish. Then assign each activity a numerical value, with 1 being the highest priority and 4 the lowest.

1 = Must finish this project this month

2 = Must finish this project this quarter

3 = Schedule when higher priorities are completed

4 = Don’t waste time on this unproductive activity.

Eliminate all number 4s! Next decide what you will need to complete the project. Take your time and think out the details of the project before you start. Take time to pray and ask God for His wisdom and guidance… and follow it! If you can’t do a great job in a certain area, hire someone to do it.

Set realistic mini goals or projects by breaking down a big project into smaller tasks. For example, if you need to extend your garage to make an office, a mini project might be seeing what you can get rid of, then organizing what’s left. Next removing wall shelving and so on.
In other words, how do you eat an elephant? One-bite-at-a-time. Break down each project and you won’t be overwhelmed! It’s like walking through a desert with a compass and one canteen of water. By carefully following the compass and rationing your water wisely, you will live, instead of dying. How well you manage your time determines your prosperity, which again leads us back to wisdom.

“The fear (reverence) of the Lord, is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”Proverbs 1:7

“How blessed is the man who finds wisdom, and the man who gains understanding. For her profit is better than the profit of silver, and her gain better than fine gold. She is more precious than jewels; and nothing you desire compares with her. Long life is in her right hand; In her left hand are riches and honor. Prov. 3:13-16

Rabbi Sha’ul (Paul) who wrote most of the New Covenant, was a scholar and sought the training of the wise teacher RabbiGamaliel. So why do we who represent the God Most High not ask Him for wisdom so we can be extraordinary in everything we do, so that people will ask us how we do it and we can brag on Him? I think it is because we are proud, thinking we can do it ourselves or we’ll figure it out ourselves. Therefore, I say if you are not asking God for wisdom all the time, then you are just plain proud and arrogant against God.

Being smart is to understand facts. Whereas wisdom is knowing the best thing to do with those facts. Smart is good, but wisdom is a much higher priority, so ask God who makes no mistakes for it.

Let’s talk about Joseph who interpreted Pharaoh’s dreams. Contrary to what most people think, Joseph wasn’t promoted to being the second in command of Egypt just because he interpreted his dream. It was because after he interpreted it, he laid out a wise plan to save Egypt during the famine. So he was a blessing to pharaoh and got promoted. Sound familiar?

Joseph said: “… Let Pharaoh act by appointing administrators over the land and take a fifth portion from the land of Egypt during the seven years of abundance. Then let them gather all the food from these good years that are coming, and let them store up grain under Pharaoh’s hand as food for the cities, so they may preserve it. Let the food be held in reserve for the land for the seven years of famine that is coming upon the land of Egypt. Then the land will not be annihilated by the famine.” Now the plan seemed good in the eyes of Pharaoh as well as all his servants. Then Pharaoh said to his servants, “Can a man like this be found, one in whom is God’s Spirit?” Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one as discerning and wise as you. You! You will be over my house, and all my people will pay homage to you. Only in relation to the throne will I be greater than you.” Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “See, I appoint you over the whole land of Egypt.”  Genesis 41:34-41

Here’s a wise way to increase your income. Save 15%-30% on almost everything you buy. Jackie and I bought a fixer upper house and needed to spend about $10,000 at Home Depot. So we got $10,000 worth of Home Depot gift cards at 13% off (for $8700) Then we got another 10% off by using their store coupons. So our total savings was 23% off or $2300! We also do this when we eat out.

You can buy discounted gift cards for thousands of stores and restaurants online at: and and
Decades ago, when I was a boat builder I learned how to read blueprints and take measurements. Years later when I needed a job I went to a small kitchen company and made them this offer. My wife would call their leads and I would go measure the jobs, give the customers their pricing and write up the contracts. Since they were a small business their prices were great, even after paying me.

When we first started they were selling about 4 jobs a month. But we brought them about 16 jobs a month. My average commission was $500 so we were earning about $2,000 a week by solving their time problem of having to go give estimates and install the jobs too. Oh, and here again we made no investment but our time and hard work. What talent or knowledge do you have that you can offer to someone that will solve a problem for them and make you more income? Think! Then bless them!

Now let’s look at two people who were both boxing champions. Mike Tyson made as much as $30 million dollars for one fight. Yet because of his lack of discipline and his not using the blessings He got from God to bless others, he wound up broke and in jail. While George Foreman, who also made millions, taught young people spiritual values and discipline. He kept giving of himself and his money and God kept on blessing him. Ever hear of the George Foreman grill? His good name and giving spirit made him millions long after his boxing career was over.

Let’s finish Part 4 by talking about management. People poorly manage their lives and often do as little as they can get away with. Those people will never see success unless they learn discipline and how to manage their life. In a business, you will not only need to work hard, but you will always need to be thinking about how to increase your productivity and income. Excellent management consists of planning, organizing, leading, motivating and supervising. So as you grow, understand that you will need to hire others to do the things you are slow at or don’t do well. We always hired a bookkeeper for about $150 a month. I could do that work, but I can also make $150 in one hour doing what I did best in our company. Get it? Here is God’s management plan…

Moses took his place to judge the people. People were standing before him all day long… When Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he was doing for the people, he said, “What’s going on here? Why are you doing this all by yourself?” …Let me tell you how to do this so that God will be in this with you. …keep a sharp eye out for competent men who fear God, men of integrity, men who are incorruptible, and appoint them as leaders over groups organized by the thousand, by the hundred, by fifty, and by ten. They’ll be responsible for the everyday work of judging among the people. They’ll bring the hard cases to you, but in the routine cases they’ll be the judges. If you handle the work this way, you’ll have the strength to carry on… Exodus 18:13,14,21-23

In other words learn to delegate to competent people of integrity whom you can trust.
